The Vettii landed near Moidel over 400 years ago, On that landing their poet Amairgin was the first to put his foot on that soil. He said a poem of thanks and blessing.Upon landing the Vettii were set upon by a magical army that Ériu, a Vadhagh sorceress, conjured up from the sods of the earth. The Vettii bards were wise to the ways of sorcery and did not fall under the thrall of these men of the earth, but saw them for what they were, mere enchantments. The bards began the song of truth which returned Ériu’s army to the bogs.
Seeing this Ériu decided to make the warriors of the Vettii welcome. Amairgin accepted her welcome with kind words and grace, while his brother Donn disparaged her linage and sorceries. For this Ériu blessed Amairgin and his kin. While she laid a blessing on Amairgin the wise, she laid a curse on Donn the impetuous that there will be no future for Donn and his kin in the land of the Vadhagh.
On landing the Vettii went inland and there met the kings of the Vadhagh at Tara. There they demanded of Vadhagh either kingship or battle. The kings of the Vadhagh stalled for time, asking for a week alone on the island before making a decision. To this the Vettii agreed.
The Vettii then returned to their ships and sailed a short distance off the coast. The treacherous Vadhagh raised a great storm against the Vettii fleet, which drove the fleet far to the west. The sailed to the west until Amairgin sang an incantation over the waves and calmed them. Once the storm had been calmed the Vettii found themselves near the Oban, which was then ruled by the Nhadragh.
Amairgin asked the Nhadragh to join them and take up arms against the Vadhagh. The Nhadragh refused. Greed grew in the hearts of the Vettii when they saw the great wealth of the Nhadragh. The Vettii fell upon Nhadragh in fury and envy. The main portion of the Nhadragh men were at sea, in the great fishing fleet, and could not defend their city. The Nhadragh that remained gave them battle at Dubh Cathair. In following battle Donn was killed, but at last it broke against the Nhadragh, and the slaughter pressed northward, and thousands of them were slain westward to the strand of Eochaill. What remained of the Nhadragh fleet landed at Dún Onaght in the Western Islands. Fortifying the land of Oban the Vettii prepared again to make war on the Vadhagh.
The next summer they divided their fleet and men, Nairn, the clan chief still living, remained in the south of the land. Duncan, his brother, and the rest of the fleet sailed to the north, where they landed their ships. Duncan destroyed the Vadhagh of the north were he could and marched inland to Tara. While Nairn move to the east from Oban and then North towards Tara.
The Vettii fought the Vadhagh for 3 days and nights on the hills of Tara, but could not break Vadhagh. On the first day Amairgin the chief bard, engaged Badb and Macha and Morrigan, battle-crows and sorceresses of the Vadhagh. Although his power was great he could not overcome the three. He was driven mad by thier magics and left the battle. On the second day the three set magic showers of sorcery upon the Vettii host, preventing them from nearing Tara. On the third day they sent a cloud of confusion amoung the Vettii making clansman fight clansman as enemy. These magical attacks forced Nairn to call for retreat to the south. That eve Vettii army camped on southern edge of Magh Sléacht. An army of Vadhagh and their sorcerers followed them from Tara and made camp in the hills to the north. The Vettii knew that another engagement with the battle crows and the Vadhagh warriors would mean their destruction.
That night Nairn had a dream. Crom Cruach came to Nairn and promised victory over the Vadhagh for the sacrifice of the Vettii wounded to Crom, to be followed with sacrifice of the Vadhagh captured in the coming battle. That very night the wounded were gathered, and Nairn made sacrifice to Crom Cruach, having the wounded men’s throats slashed at dawn. A dark shadow fell on the plain that dawn as the Vadhagh and Vettii began the battle. Crom Cruach used his power to prevent the Vadhagh from calling on their powers of sorcery. Without their magics the Vettii completely routed the Vadhagh. Nairn bound the captured Vadhagh warriors sacrificed the prisoners and their goods to Crom Cruach.
While the armies of the Vadhagh were broken, they still used their magic powers against The Vettii and deprived them of total victory. For while the power of Crom Cruach was strong in Magh Sléacht he was still weak elsewhere in the land. The artifacts of the Vadhagh protected them from Crom’s full fury and his Vettii allies could not break the Vadhagh as long the Vadhagh avoided Crom’s places of power. The war dragged on and Nairn sued for peace.
It was decided that the Vettii should rule in all of the land except for the forests and some of the other sacred places of the Vadhagh. And because Manannan, son of Lir, understood all enchantments, the Vadhagh left it to him to find places for them where they would be safe from their enemies. So he chose out the most beautiful of the hills, valleys and forest of the land for the Vadhagh to settle in; and he put hidden walls about them, that no man could see through, but they themselves could see through them and pass through them.
Crom Cruach was enraged at this compromise. He knew that as long as the Vadhagh carried on they would pose a threat to him. Crom Cruach resolved to make his allies pay in blood for their lack of will. When Nairn marched south from the council of peace at Tara to Moidel a rain of fire fell upon the Vettii army at Magh Sléacht. Nairn and a third of his army were consumed.
After this calamity Crom came to Duncan, Nairn’s brother in a dream that night. “Give to me your frist born spawn in sacrafice and the king every seventh year or my wrath will know no bounds. If you follow my commands your kings will reign true for seven years and the crops shall not fail.” It was decided by the clans that sacrifice to Crom Cruach would be done to prevent the God's vengence upon them. So with great reluctance a tradition of sacrifice to Crom Cruach in Magh Sléacht began. From then on Duncan descendents were know as "Dhubhie" or dark.
Duncan erected a large stone statue coated in gold on Magh Sléacht and dedicated it to Crom Cruach. Around this there were twelve smaller stone statues all of which we covered in Bronze. It was at this place that the Vettii made their sacrifices to him; one third of their crops to ensure their harvests would not fail, their first born children to ensure that he would not take any others, and their kings were guaranteed seven years of rightful reign in exchange for their own sacrifice at the end of this period. These sacrifices always took place on Samhain eve.
